Nemo Equipment
Ready for your next outdoor adventure? Be sure your camping gear is up to the task.Â
Founder Cam Brensinger was inspired to launch NEMO equipment after spending what he describes as a turbulent sleepless night on Mount Washington back in 2002. Realizing that an inadequately designed bivy had all but ruined his adventure, he vowed to meet the challenge of designing camping gear that was up to the challenge of outdoor adventures, enhancing the experience rather than detracting from it. The night on Mount Washington had been a lesson in the need for impeccable design.
It was at that moment that the idea for NEMO Equipment was born. Brensinger founded the company in his last semester of college at the Rhode Island School of Design, opening his first location just days after graduation. Two years of designing later, the NEMO equipment line was launched.
The accolades soon rolled in. In 2005, NEMO received the overall Brand New Award from the international sports platform ISPO, followed by design recognition from both TIME and Popular Science and a string of awards in the years that followed.Â
But NEMO Equipment is more than just another pretty face. The company is devoted to addressing the devastating impact that climate change is having on the planet and all of humanity.
To that end, NEMO has made it a priority to drastically reduce the company's carbon footprint. NEMO has established its carbon footprint baseline and is using science-based reduction targets. NEMO measures its carbon emissions on an annual basis to ensure it is reducing its carbon footprint and staying financially accountable through carbon credit purchases. NEMO became Climate Neutral Certified in 2022. Its sustainability plan is to cut its emissions in half by 2030. Also, the company's office space is powered by 100% renewable energy.
NEMO Equipment's dedication to sustainability is evident in its camping gear. All NEMO camping gear is manufactured to meet the highest standards for sustainability, including waste, carbon emissions and circularity. The company characterizes its products as built to last, not to landfill. The company ensures that its production process requires fewer resources and results in less manufacturing waste. Its camping gear is built to be long-lasting and easily repairable, so less of it ends up in the landfill and instead, owners enjoy years and years of use.Â
A Bluesign certified partner itself, NEMO expects its vendors to be just as committed to sustainability. Bluesign certification means that textile products are safe to the environment, workers and customers, including not just the products themselves, but the chemicals, materials and processes involved in their manufacture.
Looking beyond its own production and processes, NEMO has worked to leverage its brand to influence politics and society as a whole on the issue of reversing climate change. Building on its climate change platform, the company also advocates for diversity, inclusivity and social justice.
